Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Course Overview

If you currently work with those who have mental health issues, or are considering doing so either in the statutory or voluntary sectors, you need to know about and understand Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Nurses, counsellors, prison officers, probation workers, psychotherapists and other mental health workers will find this course absolutely indispensable for acquiring knowledge about the subject, identifying useful skills, and considering therapeutic interventions.

CBT is one of the most commonly administered and used therapies in the mental health sector. It is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of many mental health conditions, and the course "Understanding Cognitive Behavioural Therapy" is independently accredited as a level of learning equivalent to Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Successful completion of the course therefore attracts a Level 4 NCFE Award, which is comparable to the first year of an undergraduate degree, and also gains you 30 Accreditation Points towards Membership of the Counselling Society.

Entry Requirements

The course is open to anyone with a genuine and positive attitude to the subject matter, and no prior knowledge is needed. However, as this is a Level 4 NCFE course, a good standard of literacy and general education is needed to progress and absorb the course concepts and materials. GCSE at grade C or above is therefore suggested as a general guideline. Although the course is at Level 4, you don't need counselling experience to be eligible.

Membership of the Counselling Society

This is UNIQUE: as mentioned above, students of this course will be awarded 30 points towards accreditation with the National Counselling Society. This is a really "big deal" for anyone committed to a career within the profession. Membership of NCS requires 75 points, so this course fulfils almost half of that requirement. Full accreditation requires 150 points, so completion of the course gets you well on the way, and is a real stepping stone on your career path.

My Distance Learning College strongly advises you to join the National Counselling Society as they are the most forward-thinking Counselling organisation in the UK.

As a student of My Distance Learning College the cost is £20 per year, and we send you the application form when you order your course.

Length of Study

Despite its perhaps daunting title, the course only needs around 100 study hours over a 12 month period, which is achievable by even the busiest professional.

If the prospect of exams frightens the life out of you, there is even more good news. There is no final exam!

The low price of the course includes dedicated tutor support, regular critique and feedback, and all assignments are marked by one of our professional tutors. Additionally, the tutor for this course has set up a forum for all students studying Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and related courses. This is accessed through the College's unique Student Portal, so you can also interact with other students who are studying at the same time. You will also gain help and insight into this and other related courses by communicating with fellow students in this fantastic online community.
