Substance Abuse & Therapeutic Interventions

Course Overview

Are you considering becoming a Drugs Worker?

- Did you know that since 2010 you can't be employed as a Drugs Worker (even in a voluntary   capacity) without a Level 3 qualification?

- What do you really know about Drugs and Substance Misuse?

This course addresses all those questions and more . . . .

Misconceptions about addiction in all of its many forms abound in society today. Despite this, and the proliferation of "urban myths" surrounding the use and abuse of drugs, intoxicants, and other substances, many people have, at best, a perfunctory understanding of the subject.

This course, which has been recently rewritten to encompass all the latest changes in control and legislation, advances in treatments and therapies, and accepted "best practice" in them, will give you a thorough grounding in the subject and enable you to assist and treat sufferers. It's also useful for giving parents an insight into what is available to their children, how and when they are likely to come into contact with drugs and illegal substances, and how to recognise the effects.

Course Structure

The course follows a logical structure, from explaining the language and jargon associated with the subject matter, an exploration of the types and definitions of drugs, how to identify and treat symptoms and deal with emergencies, and an exhaustive section dealing with the physical and mental effects of prolonged drug use. It also examines the way drugs affect different body types, differing levels of physical fitness and psychological tolerance. Finally, treatments and counselling are looked at in some detail, and the course makes students aware of organisations and processes that potentially enable detoxification and "kicking the habit".

Legislation

The issue of legislation affects us all in every aspect of our lives, and the caring professions have more than their fair share of applicable rules, regulations and legal compliance requirements. There is a dedicated section which demystifies the relevant legislation affecting those working in the drug and substance abuse fields, and how those laws influence both policy and practice within the sector.

Course Materials

One of the key benefits of studying Health and Social Care with My Distance Learning College is that, unlike other distance learning providers, we deliver the entire package of course materials in a single dispatch. This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the course, and chart their progress much more effectively. The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers fragments the learning process and actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

PLUS: Students of My Distance Learning College automatically get FREE access to the acclaimed “I Learn It Easy” coursework management system, which makes submitting assignments, getting feedback and critique, and interacting with other students on the course for mutual support, an absolute breeze! Push-button simplicity . . .

Level 3 NCFE Accredited Qualification

The course is accredited by NCFE, who are an awarding body regulated by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, The Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales, and the Council for Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.

The course meets the Level 3 NCFE criteria, and can be completed in 12 months. Qualification is achievable by even the busiest professional, and because of its modular construction could probably even be squeezed in to the schedule of a full-time homemaker with a little reorganisation. In addition, there are no entry requirements the course; an interest in the subject is all you need. Because the course is at Level 3, you do need a reasonable level of literacy to be able to both understand the concepts introduced, and get the most out of the materials.

This course is also mapped to DANOS (Drug and Alcohol Industry National Occupational Standards).
